  DEVELOPMENT OF THE
AUTISTIC CHILD
Dr. Jack Amos & Sonja Flournoy

The presenter  is Sonja Flournoy:

Sonja is a specialists in Autism and early childhood development. As a mother of an autistic child and a gifted speaker, Sonja is able to both understand and empathize with her audience as well as connect to the needs of the individual client. Her skills as a "people person" and her obvious concern over autistic children, blended with her spirituality, are why so many seek her advise. Sonja is a strong advocate for families where a person(s) has autism.

Target Audience:
The target audience for this seminar includes Social Workers, Educators, Counselors, Recreational Therapist, and professionals in the field of mental health, and Students in professional training.
Overall Seminar Goal: The goal of this seminar is to develop the knowledge base of the attendees in the area of Autism and related disorders and their impact on family the individual, the educational system and community

You will learn:     How to define Autism, To understand the terms of Autism , Common myths about autism, Misconceptions about autism,Problems facing parents, How to prepare the school, Hints on aiding in the development of autistic children,

The Controversy The current controversy regarding the possible increase in Autism seems worthy to bring it to the bigger audience. During  the seminar, Sonja will present conflicting viewpoints, each with their own bias.  At LifeSpan, we are now attempting to determine if the incidence of autism is increasing. We know for sure that the number of kids with the diagnosis of Autism has certainly increased. Sonja will present conflicting statistics on this subject. According to Dr Amos, "The sheer complexity of this phenomenon prevents any clear conclusions. What we do know is that the number of young children coming into the system each year is significantly greater than in the past, and that the demand for services to meet the needs of this special population will continue to grow

A Challenge for Public Schools:  Historically, many school systems have chosen to educate challenging children in private schools, believing public schools could not deal with their sometimes aggressive and unpredictable behavior. Private placement is very expensive, and also runs against the belief that students with autism can best learn social skills by staying in the classroom with their peers. Federal law also requires that schools provide the "least restrictive" environment for students. Faced with the rapid growth in autism spectrum diagnoses, many school districts are now trying to educate these kids themselves

After completing the seminar you should be able to: Differentiate between the Autism Spectrum Disorders , Describe early and current theories of Autism  Spectrum Disorders,   Explain early warning signs of ASD, Discuss diagnostic assessments ,  Describe at least two interventions for each of the following: educational settings, behavioral situations and social interactions, generate discussion regarding future ideas and research

CONTINUING EDUCATION  UNITS (CEU's)

LifeSpan Is currently developing their seminars to comply with the requirements for certification by the American Psychological Association and the National Association of Social Workers.  All attendees that complete the seminar will be awarded a certificate of completion and proper CEU's will be accredited.
